Circumcision

We are pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Mitra Arjang, who is bringing her surgical expertise to Hart Family Medical. One of the services she is offering is child and adult circumcision.

What is it?

Circumcision is a surgical procedure in which the foreskin (the skin covering the end of the penis) is removed. Some scientific studies show a number of medical benefits for circumcision. However, it is mostly done for religious, social or cultural reasons

Interested?

If your son is 8 years or older, or you are an adult male, you may phone us directly at (403) 452-6622 to book an appointment for circumcision consultation. Please note, circumcision is not covered by Alberta Health Services, and payment will be required at the time of the appointment.

Procedure Information

What to prepare Before the Procedure

  • Buy Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and Vaseline ointment and bring them with you on the appointment day. Do not apply the Vaseline before the appointment.

  • The tylenol dose is 10mg per each kilogram of body weight. You can use liquid Acetaminophen or the tablets.

Children's tylenol dosing.

During the Procedure

  • After cleansing the penis and area, an anesthetic medicine is injected into the base of the penis. Then the foreskin will be separated from the groove and removed. Then the bleeding spots are closed, the edges are sutured with absorbable sutures.
  • The procedure takes less than 30 mins.

After the Procedure

  • We cover the incision edge with vaseline.
  • NO BANDAGE SHOULD BE WRAPPED AROUND THE PENIS
  • The patient can take Tylenol every 6 hours for 2-3 days for the pain.
  • The patient can wear loose fitting briefs and after each void rinse with water and apply vaseline as needed.
  • The patient can shower after one day, tap and dry the penis and apply Vaseline on the incision.
  • The pain and discomfort usually subside after 2-3 days, but the complete healing of the wound takes 2-3 weeks.
